How the Test Works

Two Parts, One Theory Test

The car theory test is booked and taken as one test. It has two parts: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception. You must pass both parts in the same sitting to pass overall.

If you pass one part but fail the other, you must book and take the full theory test again.

Part 1 — Multiple Choice

50 questions in 57 minutes. The current pass mark is 43 out of 50.

Part 2 — Hazard Perception

14 video clips with 15 developing hazards in total. The current pass mark is 44 out of 75.

Part 1

Multiple-Choice Questions

You will have 57 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions. Before the real test begins, you will see instructions and you can try a practice question so you understand the screen layout.

Answer on Screen

A question and several possible answers appear on screen. Select the answer you believe is correct.

Video-Based Questions

Three questions are based on a short silent video showing a normal driving situation. You can replay the video during this part.

Flag Questions

You can flag questions you want to return to and review or change answers before finishing.

Current pass mark: 43 correct answers out of 50. You do not have to use all 57 minutes if you finish sooner. After this section, you can take a break of up to 3 minutes before hazard perception begins.

Part 2

Hazard Perception Test

Before the hazard perception section starts, you will be shown a short tutorial explaining how it works.

You will then watch 14 clips showing everyday road scenes. Every clip contains at least one developing hazard, and one clip contains two developing hazards.

You score more points when you identify a developing hazard early. The maximum score for each developing hazard is 5 points.

What is a developing hazard?

Something that would cause you to take action, such as changing speed or direction.

Click at the right time

Respond as soon as you see the hazard starting to develop. Continuous or patterned clicking can result in no score for that clip.

Pass mark: 44 / 75

You need at least 44 points out of the available 75 to pass the hazard perception section.

How to Prepare for Your Theory Test

Good preparation should combine knowledge of the Highway Code with repeated practice questions and real-world hazard awareness during your driving lessons.

Study the Highway Code

Learn signs, rules, road markings, safety principles and responsibilities.

Practise Questions

Use official-style practice questions so you become comfortable with the format and timing.

Practise Hazard Awareness

During lessons, actively identify situations that could develop into hazards and discuss them with your instructor.

Use Your Lessons

Ask your Pass2Success instructor to explain road situations, signs or rules you are unsure about.

What Happens Next?

Booking the Test

You need a provisional driving licence to book the car theory test. The standard car theory test fee is currently £23 when booked through GOV.UK.

If You Pass

Your theory test pass certificate number lasts for 2 years. You must pass your practical driving test within that period or take the theory test again.

If You Fail

You will be told which parts you did not score enough points on. You must retake the full theory test and wait at least 3 working days before taking it again.

Theory is easier to remember when you connect it to real driving. During lessons, ask questions about signs, junctions, stopping distances, vulnerable road users and developing hazards. Seeing these situations on the road can make revision more meaningful.
