Driving Licence
You must have held a full driving licence for at least three years.
Eyesight
You must meet the DVSA eyesight requirement, including reading a number plate from the required distance.
Fit and Proper
DVSA must consider you a fit and proper person. Driving offences and disqualifications are assessed as part of the application.
Criminal Record Check
You must obtain a new criminal record check specifically for your first ADI application.
Right to Work
You must meet the legal requirements to work in the United Kingdom.
DBS Check and PDI Registration
Complete the criminal record check and DVSA registration stages before progressing through the qualification tests.
Criminal Record Check
You must apply for a new criminal record check specifically for becoming a driving instructor, even if you already hold another DBS certificate.
- Prepare identity documents
- Apply through the current GOV.UK-linked screening service
- Your certificate will be sent to you
- Keep the certificate and reference details secure
Register as a Potential Driving Instructor
After receiving the required criminal record information, apply to begin the ADI qualification process with DVSA.
Information You May Need
- Your driving licence number
- Criminal record check certificate details
- The certificate issue date
- Details of relevant offences or court cases
- Details of driving disqualifications
DVSA will issue registration information if your application is accepted. Processing times vary and may take several weeks or longer.
Trainee Driving Instructor Licence

- You must meet DVSA training and sponsorship rules
- The current trainee licence application fee is £140
- The licence does not guarantee employment or pupils
- You must comply with all trainee-licence conditions
Driving Instructor Qualification Tests
You must pass all three DVSA tests to qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor.
ADI Part 1
Tests your knowledge of road procedures, traffic signs, driving law, instructional techniques and your ability to identify developing hazards.
ADI Part 2
Assesses vehicle control, safe decision-making, manoeuvring, planning and your overall driving standard in varied conditions.
ADI Part 3
Assesses lesson planning, teaching and learning strategies, risk management, communication and adaptation to the pupil.
Choosing the Right Driving Instructor Training Programme
Compare the quality of tuition, course structure, individual support, trainer experience and ongoing career guidance before committing.
Training Quality
Look for a balanced curriculum covering theory, advanced driving, lesson planning and instructional skills.
Support and Resources
Choose a provider offering clear feedback, mentorship and ongoing communication.
Evidence of Results
Review genuine pass evidence and testimonials rather than relying only on headline success-rate claims.
Earnings, Standards Checks and Professional Development
Qualification is the beginning of your professional career, not the end of your development.
Earning Potential
Pass2Success estimates that instructors may charge around £30 to £35 per hour. Actual gross revenue and take-home earnings vary by location, experience, lesson price, working hours, operating costs, cancellations and pupil demand.
ADI Registration
Once you pass all three tests, you must register within the required period before charging for lessons as a fully qualified ADI. The current first-registration fee is £300.
Standards Checks
Qualified ADIs have at least one standards check every four years and must renew their registration and criminal record check every four years.
Continued Professional Development
Ongoing learning can include workshops, advanced-driving courses, coaching development, seminars and updates on DVSA guidance. DVSA allows instructors to record a commitment to at least seven hours of CPD each year.
